An Airbrush Cake: Modern Wedding
I painted the above airbrush cake for a friends wedding last year ... you may be surprised how it was made though! Now, I am not sure if you all are aware but wedding cakes are incredibly expensive!!! And that's just for a plain ol' white one. So this new market has opened up for wedding cakes - Fake Wedding Cakes (or faux if you want to be fancy about it!) When my girlfriend asked me to make her fake cake I jumped at the opportunity - and then she told me what color she wanted - dark orange to match her wedding invitations!! Do you have any idea how hard it is to custom color fondant (wedding cake icing that is like dough)!!!! Well - trust me! It's tough! Then I had an thought - no one is going to eat this thing anyway (unless styrofoam is the new rice cake) - so I figured why not paint it? The cake shown above is made of styrofoam and covered in white fondant (a sweet dough) and then, you guessed it, it was painted the orange color with an airbrush. I didn't bother to use edible paint (i.e. food coloring) because, again, no one was eating this baby! I simply used acrylic paint mixed to the exact color she requested. Once it was painted I added the cream color details with more fondant attached to the cake with a bit of water. With very little effort (compared to custom mixing fondant) I was able to whip up this gorgeous cake. I know this is not your tradition airbrush cake, but, if you are asked (or want to) make a fake cake this was a super easy way to do it! P.S. If you want to know more about fondant www.wilton.com is the place to look!
