ASET Air Affair

The ASET Air Affair is one of the premiere airbrush training events in North America!

If you don't want to read my comments about it feel free to head directly to their website and read about it yourself:

My Comments

Right up front - I have not been to one of these events - but I have heard from MANY others how great it is and I will summarize here what they have told me.

If you want to help me get to an Air Affair so I can give you a first hand review and share the learnings with you feel free to donate to the "cause" (hehe) by clicking the donate button below:

First - let's talk about ASET. This is so cool. ASET is the acronym for Automotive Spraying Equipment Technologies center - who knew there was such a thing! I think from that alone that it is obvious that these guys know what they are doing. Check out their mission statement:

To develop and deliver quality technical educational programs related to automotive airbrush artestry in the custom painting market and raise the available knowledge level of the industry.

Cool heh?

Unlike the Airbrush Action Getaways, the Air Affair is not a class based conference. That is, you do not sign up to take a particular class from a particular instructor. Instead, you sign up for the whole event which takes place in one room and the instructors come to you.

There is a stage with video cameras that project what the instructor is doing in close up for everyone to see while you practice along at your painting station. I like the idea of this teaching arrangement because it sets the artist up to learn things that that normally would not try. For instance, if you are interested in automotive work you may never learn the skills of canvas portraits - but in this style of instruction you get the chance to give it a whirl anyway. It really serves to teach students the versatility of the airbrush.

And the instructors are again - the best of the best. Instructors vary from event to event (see details on their website) but here is a list of the folks that frequent the ASET Air Affair events:

  • Craig Fraser
  • Deb Mahan
  • Steve Vandemon
  • Fonzy
  • Gerald Mendez
  • Bob Soroka
  • Jason Doll
  • Ron Gibbs
  • Pam Shanteau
  • Mike Lavallee
  • Brian Papa
  • Steve Driscoll

Another nice thing about these events is that they are not always in the same locations and move around North America - but I have been told, if you have to pick one and only one that the Salt Lake City one is the one to go to.

Events range from 2 to 3 days in length and typically are a very VERY full day of instruction.

I am not certain whether airbrushes are supplied to the students at this event but there is an exhibition of all sorts of airbrush products.

Like all good courses the ASET Air Affair is expensive: $300 to $400 USD not including hotel or food. But again - I have heard that it is more than worth it!

If you've been, please Contact Me and let me know what you thought about it.
